Origin of Rawther community

During 1000 century, chola kings expanded their territory upto indonesia. during that time, they heared about the muslim expansion in Northern hindukush region and those expansions are mostly happened with the help of central asian turkish slave warriors.

chola kings invited turks from central asia for horse trade and training. these newly converted turks settled in chola kingdom and mixed with local maravar community.   due to their influence many maravars converted to islam. chola kings and later pandya kings recruited soldiers and formed new cavalry.

decedants of these people became rawthers. they were intermarried with mughal soldiers during mughal rule of madurai. 

present day rawthers are mostly not decedants of above clan. during the colonial rule, military races became prominent. so many tamil muslims started using rawther surname to claim martial status.
